Treatment with radiation: Sterilization of biotechnological working materials and input materials

The importance of biotechnological research, development and production has increased significantly in the public consciousness since the pandemic years: Biotechnology played a central role in the development of testing options and vaccines against SARS CoV-2. Biotechnology is also used in drug production, cell cultivation and fermentation, purification of proteins and other biological substances, as well as various laboratory and diagnostic procedures.

Compliance with the highest quality standards is mandatory to all industrial biotechnological processes:

  • Sterile working materials and consumables are a basic requirement for valid results.
  • Controlled conditions for sampling, testing or research must be ensured and contamination of the products with microorganisms must be prevented.

Radiation sterilization guarantees the sterility of working materials and input materials and thus makes an important contribution to the quality assurance of biotechnological products.

Radiation sterilization: Products & Applications of biotechnology

Radiation sterilization can be used to reliably sterilize a wide range of materials and products in biotechnology. These include solids, powders, liquids and complex devices. We at BGS support you as an external service provider in the sterilization of, e.g.

  • Bioreactors
  • Pharmaceutical primary packaging materials
  • Working materials for handling and sampling
  • Container and dosing systems
  • Packaging material
  • Raw materials
  • Nutrient media
  • Plant substrates

Advantages for biotechnology: Sterilization of sensitive materials

As it is a cold sterilization process, radiation sterilization is ideal for sensitive biological materials that are sensitive to heat and whose biological or chemical structure could be altered by high temperatures or humidity.

Radiation sterilization guarantees the highest hygienic standards and offers many advantages for the treatment of biotechnological products and laboratory materials. Microorganisms reliably lose their reproducibility through irradiation with gamma rays or E-Beam. This permanently eliminates bacteria, viruses, fungi and their spores. Another advantage of radiation sterilization is the penetrating ability of the materials. Gamma rays in particular have a high penetration depth and can penetrate entire pallets. Working materials or input materials can therefore be sterilized in their sealed packaging.

In contrast to chemical sterilization methods, radiation sterilization leaves no residue. This is particularly important for products that are used directly on or in the human body. Once the irradiation process is completed, the applied radiation dose is checked using dosimeters attached to the product. If all specifications have been met, the quality assurance department immediately releases the products which can be used without any waiting time. This makes sterilization using electron or gamma rays the ideal solution for time-critical supply chains.

Normative requirements: Validation Process for biotechnology products

If biotechnological products or laboratory materials are labeled as sterile, they must be validated before being placed on the market or used. The validation of radiation sterilization is regulated by the standard DIN EN ISO 11137.
The validation process consists of three parts:

  • Microbiological validation
  • Dosimetric validation
  • Application validation

This required for the market launch of a product, the qualification of a second system or a second supplier while retaining the selected sterilization process. A new validation process is also necessary when changing from an established sterilization method to another, for example from gamma to E-Beam.

Biotechnological one-way products: Single-use laboratory needs for industry & research

Whether in the production of medicines and vaccines, cell cultivation and fermentation or the purification of proteins and other biological substances: Single-use laboratory supplies play an important role in the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries as well as in research laboratories. The use of radiation-treated, sterile single-use products minimizes the risk of contamination in the process.

Among other things, we regularly sterilize for our customers:

  • Pipettes and trays
  • Blood collection tubes
  • Petri dishes
  • Sample containers
  • Lancets and blood gas capillary tubes
  • Test kits
