Irradiation services in the logistics chain
The basic scheme of an irradiation service appears simple:
In fact, this involves complex planning, which is a key pillar of a service provider’s core competence. As a reliable partner, we are an integral part of your supply chain, in which irradiation is a seamless and time efficient production step after manufacturing. After irradiation, your products are ready for collection and direct delivery to their destination without long waiting times. And in the same form in which they reached us.
Our processes are secure and reproducible: to ensure complete traceability, we record every order – from the receipt of goods through the irradiation process to delivery – and document it in accordance with regulatory requirements. With BGS, your product is in the best hands!
Find out how irradiation works in detail, from delivery to collection.
We determine the place of irradiation in consultation with the customer. In addition to the transport routes, the type of product handling, system-specific aspects and the capacity utilization of the systems also play a role here. All systems are state of the art and are configured differently. In this way, a wide range of products can be treated and the failure of systems can be compensated for. In addition, the “principle of redundancy” applies: at least one site is always able to take over products from other sites. In the event of unforeseen disruptions or express requests, these can usually be handled by another site. In this way, we make a significant contribution to the reliable fulfillment of your delivery obligations and guarantee optimum planning security.
The site has four electron accelerators (0.5 – 3.0 MeV, max. 150 kW) with flexible handling systems for continuous products and parcelled goods. In addition, a 5 MCi cobalt-60 gamma system is available in Wiehl for the irradiation of Euro and industrial pallets up to 1.90 meters high.
Incoming and outgoing goods are open Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
Bruchsal offers two electron accelerators (2.5 – 10.0 MeV) for flexible irradiation of continuous products and parcelled goods. Components up to 12 meters long and 1.6 meters wide can be treated. Since 2018, the site has been operating a modern 6 MCi cobalt-60 gamma system for pallets up to 1.90 meters high.
Incoming and outgoing goods are open Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
In Saal, a 10 MeV electron accelerator (10 MeV) with automatic Euro-pallet handling enables the efficient irradiation of large quantities. In addition, a 5 MeV electron accelerator (2.0 – 4.0 MeV) is available for the flexible irradiation of continuous products such as pipes and cables.
Incoming and outgoing goods are open Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
Standard ramps are available at all three BGS locations for loading and unloading trucks. Depending on the location, the freight forwarder can also load and unload from the side or use a loading crane. It is important to coordinate deviating deliveries and collections in advance so that integration into the logistics process is possible without any problems. In the case of frequent deliveries, we recommend that packaging and pallets be replaced regularly, as they lose their strength with repeated irradiation, among other things.
Our experts will be happy to advise you on which replacement frequencies are appropriate for each type of packaging. When using the packaging multiple times, care must be taken to ensure that the irradiation labels and indicator dots on the packaging are completely removed after each treatment. This prevents mix-ups. And with regard to delivery forms: For cost reasons, delivery forms that are suitable for automatic processing should always be considered. For special delivery forms, please contact us.
120 x 100 cm, height up to 190 cm, weight up to max. 750 kg
120 x 80 cm, height up to 190 cm, weight up to max. 750 kg
e.g. cartons, sacks, drums, big bags, racks
in containers and lattice boxes
Winding products with flange diameter up to 3.20 m, weight up to 5,000 kg, max. product bending radius 0.90 m
During sterilization, the product-specific radiation dose applied is checked and confirmed after the irradiation process using the attached dosimeters. In the case of radiation crosslinking, downstream material tests are required depending on the area of application. If everything meets the specifications, immediate approval is given by quality assurance team in both cases – the product is then ready for immediate use without any waiting time. The transport logistics to the end customer are seamless, resulting in enormous time and processing advantages.
The normal lead time at BGS is between five and a maximum of ten working days. We provide estimated collection dates depending on the quantity delivered and capacity utilization. On completion of each irradiation, a completion notification is automatically generated for the customer with the definitive collection order, regardless of the time of day. This allows you to arrange the further logistics of the goods and organize collection. Each irradiation is accompanied by various documents, such as certificates, which are available to you at the same time as the notification of completion.
Thanks to the consistent application of our QM system, all processes in the company are defined – this is how we achieve reliable and reproducible results. All orders are monitored from receipt of goods to delivery and documented in accordance with regulatory requirements to ensure complete traceability.
After the irradiation process, our quality assurance department uses the dosimeter attached to the product composite to check whether the correct dose has been applied. The product is then ready for use without any waiting time.
The radiation used by BGS works through the packaging. There is great flexibility in terms of packaging types and materials. They range from boxes, bags and pouches to entire pallets. Deciding on the optimum packaging is extremely important in order to achieve uniform dose application and good process efficiency. Important considerations include the density in the packaging and the number of containers or pieces per package. As BGS uses automated systems to process your products, this is the preferred option for cost reasons. Our specialists will be happy to advise you on the possibilities.
The normal lead time at BGS is between five and ten working days. Depending on the quantities and the capacity utilization of the systems, we can offer you express processing within 24 hours at special conditions.
Products or raw materials can be delivered as packaged units, as bulk goods or as coiled continuous strands, profiles or tubes. We accept industrial packaging, such as cardboard boxes on standard pallets, bulk goods in recyclable containers or coiled products on standard drums. We can also accept special shapes, such as pipes on transport racks or other shapes. For safety reasons, we do not accept flammable liquids or pressurized containers in our facilities.
The usual form of delivery is Euro pallets (120 x 80 cm). It is also possible to process dimensions up to a maximum of 12.0 m x 1.6 m, depending on weight and composition. However, this only applies to treatment with E-Beam.
