Automated E-Beam sterilization in Pittsburgh

BGS US LLC is starting operations at its new US site in Pittsburgh with state-of-the-art electron accelerator technology and fully automated product handling. The ultra-modern facility was built in just twelve months; a total of 19 months elapsed from approval to the start of production. Covering an area of around 10,000 m², the plant offers flexible storage and production capacities as well as sufficient space for future growth.

Strategic step into a growth market

The decision to enter the US market is based on a clear need:

“Limited sterilization capacities make it difficult for US medical technology manufacturers to ensure long-term supply security. With our new plant in Pittsburgh, we are helping to close this gap,“ explains Dr. Andreas Ostrowicki, Managing Director of BGS Beta-Gamma-Service. ”The northeastern United States is one of the most important regions for the medical technology industry, and we expect dynamic growth there in the coming years. With its excellent transport links and strong tradition as an industrial location, Pittsburgh offers ideal conditions for our local commitment.”

The US market has been experiencing bottlenecks in sterilization capacity for several years due to increasing uncertainties surrounding the use of ethylene oxide (EtO) and a rising demand from customers for alternatives to Gamma sterilization. E-Beam technology offers a powerful, environmentally friendly, and residue-free alternative that has only been available to a limited extent in the US to date.

US medical device manufacturers rely on E-Beam technology

Leonard Zuba, Managing Director of BGS US LLC, and Dr. Andreas Ostrowicki, Managing Director of BGS Beta-Gamma-Service, emphasize the importance of the new location and are pleased with the progress of the project:

“The last few months have shown that there is a high demand for innovative sterilization solutions based on electron beam technology in the US market. This confirms our concept. I am particularly pleased that we were able to complete the construction of the plant successfully and smoothly within the planned timeframe,“ says Leonard Zuba.

”The rapid and on-schedule completion of our US site is a significant milestone for BGS,” Ostrowicki continues. “The strong market demand reinforces our belief that we can rapidly expand our plant capacity. We see great growth potential and very good conditions for a successful market entry.”
